Hello Kid,
Hope you are doing well. I’m writing to you from the future. Funny, right? Don’t think the letter will be delivered in time. Anyway, it’s your birthday, right?
The things around you, the things that worry you most, they are an important part of your life, but not as important as they seem. In a blink of your left eye (yes, your left eye still blinks more often than the right), in one blink, it all will be gone—you won’t be able to remember what troubled your mind a year ago. But don’t become a skeptical son of a bitch—although that is one way to deal with life, it’s a tough route, and the way back is long and tangled.
Life is a joke all the way. It’s not always a good joke, and sometimes you get it only after years have passed, but you should laugh every time you can, even if it’s just inside. There are places and times when it is socially inappropriate to laugh, so for those occasions laughing inside is the best choice.
Society doesn’t know a thing but acts like it knows every goddamn atom. Bunch of idiots, and that’s an important fact to remember. Don’t argue much. Only when it seems fun and you are surrounded by the idiots you like. An even more important fact to remember—you are part of socium and you are an idiot yourself, a big one—but that shouldn’t concern you. Being an idiot is part of human nature, and there are great idiots you can look at and even be proud to be the same species as them, if you wish. Life is a joke, remember?
Find your passion. Anything. It can be something people think is silly—like collecting every recipe you have ever gotten in your life or being crazy about the Marvel universe (please, don’t)—or it can be something “great” like composing classical music or being an eco-activist with a healthy brain. Either way, don’t let other people dictate what you should like. Don’t let me dictate what you should like. Me especially. I’m your best friend and worst enemy. Most likely, we gotta live together till the end of our life, so it will be great if you can find some peace inside of you.
Remember, you are a great kid, a little bit autistic as far as I can recall, but you have a great ability of noticing things and you deeply care about other people, even if it could look otherwise, and not all people get it. But I get it and I always will. Enjoy your moments the way you like to. Create as much as you can, because even if you hate it a hundred times in the process, there are a few times that make you feel like you are leaving your body and touching something you can’t see or feel when you’re locked inside.
See you in the mirror in 20-something years.
Always yours,
You from the future
